SUMMARYThis step-by-step article describes how to install the Active Directory administrative tools to a Microsoft Windows XP Professional Workstation computer. With Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools (included on the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM), you can manage a server remotely from any computer that is running Windows XP Professional Workstation. Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools contain Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-ins, Active Directory administrative tools, and other tools that are used to manage computers that are running Windows Server 2003.

Install the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools
After you install the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools, you can also remotely run administrative tasks on Active Directory by using the Active Directory administrative tools from a computer that is not a domain controller. The Active Directory administrative tools can be used only from a computer with access to a Windows Server 2003 domain.

Notes
You must have administrative permissions for the local computer to install and run Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools, and you must have Domain administrative permissions for the domain that you want to run administrative tasks on to remotely manage a server.
If you are running Windows XP without Service Pack 1, you must install the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 329357 before you can install the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools. For additional information about this hotfix, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
329357 Windows Server 2003 Adminpak.msi Does Not Run on a Windows XP-Based Computer Without Service Pack 1

To install Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools on a local computer, follow these steps:
Open the I386 folder on the appropriate Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM.
Double-click Adminpak.msi.
Click Next, and then click Finish.
The Adminpak.msi file installs the Active Directory administrative tools and other administrative tools, including the Terminal Services Client and Cluster Administrator.

Configure the Windows XP Professional Workstation
To use the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools to remotely run administrative tasks on a domain controller, you must first join the computer to the domain and have a valid user name and password with permissions to create a computer account. To do this, follow these steps:
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
Under Member of, click Domain, type the name of the domain that you want to join, and then click OK.
When prompted, type the user name and user password to join the computer to the domain.
Click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.
When prompted, restart your computer to apply your changes.

Use the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools
To access the server administrative tools after you install Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools and configure the Windows XP Professional Workstation computer, follow these steps:
Log on to Windows XP Professional Workstation by using domain administrator credentials.
Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Control Panel.
Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Administrative Tools.
Click any of the following server administrative tools that are included in Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools:
Active Directory Domains and Trusts
Active Directory Management
Active Directory Sites and Services
Active Directory Users and Computers
Authorization Manager
Certification Authority
Cluster Administrator
Connection Manager Administration Kit
